Spring into Math

I love to do crafts in the classroom.  Unfortunately, seems there is never enough time.  So... I decided to integrate math and art!

Skills: Symmetry and and Three Digit Addition and Subtraction

Trace the butterfly pattern.  This is in the download.  You will need to enlarge it on the copier.

I forgot to take a picture of just the drops but I just hold the bottle of paint upside down and let it drip out.  Try to overlap the colors but not too much because you do not want brown!

Fold the paper in half and smooth out the paper.  You may want a newspaper underneath because sometimes the paint leaks out.  Open up the paper and allow it to dry overnight.

This is a great book for looking at things in our world that have symmetry!

The next day fold it back and cut on the pattern.  Add a folded pipe cleaner to the head.  I like to staple rather than glue so they stay on!!

Add some cute googly eyes and a mouth!

Give each child 2 or more addition problems and the blank subtraction problems.

Students add the three digit problems with regrouping and then check their work with subtraction.

Glue them to the butterfly and you have some very cute hallway decorations!!

Click the cover to go to my TpT store and pick up the butterfly template and addition problems.

Have fun!

4.G.A.3Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.
2.NBT.B.7Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick and Freebie

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick

This is a fantastic story to read the week of Easter and end it with this very fun retelling activity!

To make the basket use a plain white lunch sack and fold it over about an inch, reach in with your hands and pull it out and it will get straight again.  It's hard to explain.  You just have to try it. Then keep folding it over til you get the height you want. When they were all making their baskets with paper bags it sounded like a thunderstorm!

I let them decorate them with markers.

For the retelling of the story.  Students put items in their baskets.  For the chick I gave them a peep!  Yummy!

Do you want another fun retelling idea? This is made out of poster board. Make sure you laminate it for durability. Then add a ziplock bag or sheet protector to the back and the students can drop the pieces into the pocket.  Tie a string around the top so they can wear it.
They loved reinacting the old lady eating the items.
Make sure you allow enough time for everyone to try it!

St. Patrick's Day Adventures and Freebie

It won't be long and your kiddos will be talking about The Leprechaun and how naughty he was the year before or how he brought them gold candy!  I'm not the teacher that likes to mess up my room or build leprechaun traps.  I'm glad they do this in earlier grades.  They ask why we are not building a trap but I just tell them we do different activities in different grades and they tend to be ok with that!

Let's start by getting a collection of books together.  There are so many great choices.
These are few of my favorites.

When I taught first grade I loved using the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover!
With all the books she's written you can read a new one every month.

I put together a few of the pages we used when I read this book.  Their favorite part was wearing the old lady dress and eating the sequence cards.  This is a picture from when we sequenced the story for Easter.

This mini-unit is available at my store for only $3.
It includes sequence cards, descriptive writing, ABC order, and counting money.

Enjoy this freebie from the mini-unit!

The Frog Principal

Are you thinking of doing all those fun spring projects like flowers, butterflies and frogs!  Well, it's snowing in Wisconsin!  Maybe if we start our spring projects the snow will go away!

The Frog Principal by Stephanie Calmenson is an adorable story about a principal who gets turned into a frog and his crazy adventures!  Pick up these vocabulary and comprehension sheets to go along with this wonderful read aloud.

You could enlarge this on the interactive whiteboard and do this as a whole group, work in partners or even have each child complete their own!

I have been focusing on increasing student vocabulary.  This sheet can used as a dictionary activity where they look up the meaning of each word or students could draw a picture and use the word in a sentence.

This is an addition game using numbers 0 through 20. Depending on the numbers chosen it could be single digit addition or double digit addition.  Click here to get this fun freebie.

If you're interested in blog hopping over to a previous post on my life cycle unit for a frog and more click on the picture!
Thanks for hopping by!

A book that goes along fantastically is Sing a Song by Gay Su Pinnell.

Southwestern Stew Pot Recipe

We like things a little spicy so we add extra hot sauce!

Started conferencing with students.  I quizzed a few on their sight words and helped edit sentences!  I'm still working on procedures for the classroom and how to work in our centers so it will be a while until they are completely independent.

Each student in our class has their own chrome book.  We keep them in a charging cart.  This year we also purchase mice for the class.  I wish companies made better headphones.  One students broke the first day in the "hinges"!  How frustrating.

Students go on raz-kids.com or IXL.com.  After they take their MAPs testing next week they will also be able to use compass learning which links their lessons directly to their scores!

See you next week!
