Superhero Reading Celebration Bundle and Freebie

This year my adventure has taken me to kindergarten and I haven't had a whole lot of moments to slow down and blog about this adventure!  Can you say busy!

Our school also adopted Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units this year so that has added to the adventure!  We recently celebrated unit 2 - Super Readers!  We all dressed up in our favorite superhero costume!  For those that didn't remember to dress up we gave them a paper headband.  We carried our favorite books and paraded to the office!

Literature Foundations: Ada Twist Scientist

This is a great story to start your science off for the year.  Students can be inspired with Ada and her passion for finding answers.

Students go outside and make observations and ask themselves questions.
Why do ants live together?
How are clouds made?
What are the bumps under the leaf?

Now let's find the answer!
Learn to research ideas in books, online or even interviews!

Literature Foundations was developed out of the need to incorporate the love of literature and teach fundamental skills at the same time.  I have coordinated these skills to the Common Core State Standards.

Share a fiction title with your students for 3 days along with a nonfiction close reading article. The reading portion of this program is set up to take 20-30 minutes a day.  This allows you to incorporate guided reading groups into your day.  Guided reading is where your students will get independent practice reading books at their level.

The writing portion should be given additional time.  Aim to have 30-45 minutes of writing a day.

This lesson plan is full of great activities to use with your class.  You will utilize fiction and nonfiction while addressing comprehension skills along with writing and grammar.

Back-To-School From the Black Lagoon!

I just love these little chapter books.  They can be quick reads that you finish in one day or two or you can stretch them out and really dive into all the figurative language.

My classes in the past can't wait for me to start reading another one!  The librarian showed them where they are so they can check out ones for themselves.  There is no way I can read them all. There are so many titles to choose from. He has 34 chapter books and that's not counting the picture books.

I start the year with Back-to-School From the Black Lagoon.

Click the picture to grab your own copy.  Easy to copy and not a lot of prep work!

Try some of his other books through out the year!  He has many that go with the seasons!

I'm working on a unit for his Christmas books but if you like Horrible Harry check this out! Click here for blog post.

I wish you all the best in your first days at school!

April Fools' Day from the Black Lagoon Literature Companion and Freebie

There is nothing better than having a special bonding moment with the whole class!
Kids love word searches so I made them a special one just for them!

We will be on spring break during April Fools' Day so I had a little fun early!
This special word search doesn't have any answers!

Look at this serious thinking!
Soon there were shout outs, "I found fool - oops no I didn't" "I found..." "I found..."
"This is hard!"

I let this go on for a few minutes and then asked them, "Did you find the words, got you?".
It was so funny. They started looking for the words and shouted when they found them.

Then it quickly dawned on them and I shouted, "April Fools'"

Hey You!!! You tricked us!!!

This is a fun book to read aloud. Hubie finds himself in another dilemma!  What prank should he pull on his friends? He gets all worked up over this and even has a bad dream.  Read this funny story and find out what Hubie decided to do.

This super fun mini-unit is only $3!
You can also find other Literature Companions to help you with your lessons!
Be on the look out for Earth Day and Field Day!
I can't believe we are coming into the last stretch of the school year!

St. Patrick's Day Adventures and Freebie

It won't be long and your kiddos will be talking about The Leprechaun and how naughty he was the year before or how he brought them gold candy!  I'm not the teacher that likes to mess up my room or build leprechaun traps.  I'm glad they do this in earlier grades.  They ask why we are not building a trap but I just tell them we do different activities in different grades and they tend to be ok with that!

Let's start by getting a collection of books together.  There are so many great choices.
These are few of my favorites.

When I taught first grade I loved using the story, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover!
With all the books she's written you can read a new one every month.

I put together a few of the pages we used when I read this book.  Their favorite part was wearing the old lady dress and eating the sequence cards.  This is a picture from when we sequenced the story for Easter.

This mini-unit is available at my store for only $3.
It includes sequence cards, descriptive writing, ABC order, and counting money.

Enjoy this freebie from the mini-unit!

WALK Comprehension Activity

Let's take a WALK!

This lesson was used as a prediction to a book.  I adapted it to fit the week of reading.

Day 1: W - Words (vocabulary)  I wrote the words for the week as we went through the story.  We also discussed syllables and word parts such as suffixes.

Day 2: A - Author's Purpose I wrote the 3 ways of an author's purpose as a reminder. I will not write this every week.  The students then discussed with their partner and then with the whole class the purpose.  I then wrote it down.

Day 3: L - Links to the story  We have been working on the three links that readers make.  Text to Self, Text to World and Text to Text.  Text to World is difficult for them to make.  This will be more of a focus in upcoming lessons.

Day 4: K - What we Know Students listed the items that they learned from the story.  Our stories this week were about geese.  They really enjoyed the nonfiction and the realistic fiction stories.  We combined both stories onto this one chart.

This has worked so great for the week that I am carrying it over to my guided reading groups.  Using smaller chart paper I have made a WALK chart for each book we are reading.  This chart is for a group that is reading a Level H book. Life on a Coral Reef by Scholastic.  Our school purchased nonfiction, fiction and content books of the entire set A through Z!!  I have so many options!  http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/guidedreading/

We will be finishing this book next week and then comparing Life in the Jungle with the coral reef!!  Wow - look at all the connections!
